On the optimal control of an animal-vegetation ecological system
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper studies the optimal control of an animal-vegetation system where growth in the animal stock is density independent. The ecological system is shown to have a limit cycle, under certain parameter values, but can also be stabilized by a simple harvesting rule. The managing unit maximizes profits from selling the meat, over an infinite planning horizon. With a domestic animal stock, costs are related to keeping a large animal stock, and not to harvesting. An optimal steady state is described, and the effects of parameter changes is discussed, in particular the discount rate. The effect of discounting on the optimal stock size is demonstrated to be ambiguous. The optimal approach path is derived analytically, and is shown to be a saddle path in state-state space. The model is exemplified with a numerical analysis that compares the discounted profit from the optimal harvest regime to a management regime implying a constant harvest ratio. Finally, a postitive stock effect is discussed. JEL Codes: C61, C62, C63, Q24, Q57

Risks assessment of forest project implementation in spatial density changes of forest under canopy vegetation using artificial neural network modeling approach Nowadays, environmental risk assessment has been defined as one of the effective in environmental planning and policy making. Considering the position and structure of vegetation on the forest floor, the main role of forest under ca...
متن کاملThe Effects of Deferred Grazing System on Vegetation Parameters in Semi-Arid Rangelands (Case Study: Jashlubar, Semnan, Iran)
Rangeland management plan is one of the major means of management and utilization of rangelands in Iran. The formulation of these plans for the rangeland users should be studied from the ecological and socio-economic points of view. One of the main envisaged activities in almost all the management plans is the grazing system. An experiment was used to study the effects of three deferred grazing...
متن کاملApplication of Ecological Theory to Management of Arid Drylands: An Example from China
Rangeland ecosystems shift across dynamic thresholds between differentecological states in response to natural or human-induced factors. These differentecological states are the result of interactions among climate, soils, grazing history, and management practices. The notion of a single ‘‘pristine’’ final state is onlyconceptual in nature, and because of this, dynamic thresholds and the effects...
متن کاملInvestigation of the Effect of Constructing Small Arc Basins System on Vegetation Composition and Biodiversity in Aridland Ecosystems in the East of Iran (Case study: Rangelands of Sarbisheh, South Khorasan Province)
Introduction: One of the ways of restoration and reclamation of damaged rangeland is to use different methods of rain harvesting such as pitting, counter furrowing, flood spreading, small arc basins system and etc., along with the reduction of runoff, it increases the soil moisture content and thus increases vegetation cover. Biodiversity is most commonly used to describe the number of species....
متن کاملAssessing vegetation rehabilitation under restoration operations in arid rangelands (Case study: Bastak, Hormozgan province)
Background and objectives A large area of Iran rangelands is located in arid and semi-arid areas which a significant percentage of them have been degraded and are not in good condition. In these areas, vegetation restoration is not easy due to the water scarcity. Water harvesting operations are among the necessary management measures to restore and develop the rangelands of these areas. Water ...
